Chapter 21
Kaylie woke up in the morning to find her computer next to her on her bed and realized she must have fallen asleep while still working on ideas for the princessâs fairy tale.
She was excited thinking about how much progress sheâd made. Still, she knew there were a lot more traditions on the queenâs list for her to do. She had a busy day scheduled that started after breakfast, when she was set up to go with the prince to Tolvania so he could show her around the village. Also, on the agenda was a Christmas tea tasting with the queen and princess, and a special tree lighting ceremony that night that the queen had promised to tell her more about. Smiling, she grabbed her computer and went back to work on the fairy tale.
Kaylie arrived downstairs at a quarter to ten, fifteen minutes before her scheduled time to meet the prince, and was surprised to find him already waiting for her.
âYouâre early,â he said.
She laughed. âAnd so are you. Iâm excited to see Tolvania.â
âAnd Iâm looking forward to showing you,â the prince said and held the door open for her.
When Kaylie got outside, she saw the same car and driver that had brought her to the castle.
âGood morning, Thomas,â she called out to him happily.
âGood morning.â Thomas smiled back at her. âSo, it looks like you got your Christmas wish after all.â
Kaylie stared back at him, confused. âMy Christmas wish?â
âWhen I brought you here,â Thomas continued. âYou said you wished you could see inside the castle and take pictures.â
âWhat?â the prince asked, sounding alarmed.
Kaylie rushed to explain. âI meant like a tourist taking pictures because it was so beautiful. I asked if there were any tours, didnât I, Thomas?â
âYes, you did,â Thomas said as he opened the back door for her.
The prince looked relieved. âThomas, can you take us to the village square? Iâd like to show Kaylie the gingerbread house and sleigh now that theyâre set up.â
âOf course,â Thomas said.
âWill the reindeer be there?â Kaylie asked in a teasing voice.
âOf course not,â the prince answered. âTheyâre still in the North Pole getting ready for Christmas Eve.â
Kaylie and Thomas both laughed.
As they drove away, Kaylie saw the queen looking out the window, watching them. Kaylie waved and the queen waved back.
When they arrived at the village square, Kaylie saw people gathered around the gingerbread house, taking pictures. It looked even more magical in its new setting. It was decorated with red and white twinkle lights and set up on a pretty red platform surrounded by snow-covered Christmas trees. She couldnât wait to get her own pictures and jumped out of the car as soon as it stopped.
When Thomas opened the door and the prince got out of the car, people started to instantly gather around him. Kaylie expected to see the prince tense up but was surprised when he did just the opposite. With a genuine smile he interacted with everyone, talking with them and shaking their hands, asking them about their families.
